The high-temperature flat heating cable, also known as heating tape, is designed for heating and maintaining the temperature of machine parts, industrial equipment, pipework and laboratory installations. The maximum permissible temperature of the fibreglass-insulated heating element is +450 °C, while its rated output is approximately 250 W/m.

Unlike a conventional round heating cable, the 35 mm wide flat construction provides a larger contact area with the heated object. This allows heat to be transferred over a wider surface and makes the heating tape suitable for applications requiring high output per metre and high temperature resistance.

The heating cable can be used for pipes, valves, vessels, machine components, test equipment and various process structures. The length, rated voltage and power output are selected according to the requirements of the application.

Applications of the high-temperature heating cable

The flat heating cable is suitable for:

  • heating industrial pipes and pipework;
  • maintaining the temperature of machine parts and equipment;
  • heating valves, connections and metal structures;
  • heating laboratory and test equipment;
  • maintaining temperatures in industrial processes;
  • assisting with cold starts;
  • applications requiring high output per metre;
  • heating surfaces with complex or irregular shapes.

The fibreglass heating tape is flexible and can be installed on surfaces of different shapes, provided that the specified minimum bending radius and installation spacing are observed.

Main benefits of the flat heating cable

  • maximum permissible heating element temperature up to +450 °C;
  • high rated output of approximately 250 W/m;
  • 35 mm wide heat transfer surface;
  • efficient contact with the heated object;
  • flexible construction;
  • fibreglass insulation;
  • suitable for industrial and laboratory applications;
  • integrated protective conductor braid;
  • electrical protection class I;
  • available in several standard lengths and power ratings;
  • custom lengths, voltages and power ratings available on request.

Temperature and control

The maximum permissible temperature of the heating cable is +450 °C. This value refers to the temperature limit of the heating element and does not mean that the heated object will automatically reach the same temperature.

The actual temperature of the object depends on:

  • the material and mass of the heated object;
  • the position of the heating cable;
  • the size of the contact area;
  • the type and amount of thermal insulation;
  • ambient temperature;
  • heat loss;
  • the selected power output;
  • the temperature control system.

This is not a self-regulating heating cable. A suitable temperature controller and sensor must be used for accurate and safe temperature control. For critical processes or high-temperature applications, an independent temperature limiter is also recommended.

The temperature sensor should be positioned so that it monitors the most relevant part of the heated object and helps prevent overheating of either the heating element or the object.

Installation

The heating cable should be installed as closely as possible against a clean and dry surface. Its flat construction provides good contact with the heated object and helps distribute heat over a wider area.

The following requirements must be observed during installation:

  • the minimum bending radius must be greater than 15 mm;
  • the distance between adjacent sections must be greater than 10 mm;
  • the heating cable must not overlap itself;
  • separate sections of the cable must not cross;
  • the cable must not be sharply bent, crushed or mechanically damaged;
  • connection sections must not be positioned in areas exceeding their permitted temperature;
  • both the heating cable and the heated surface must be dry;
  • the protective earth connection must be completed correctly;
  • the controller, sensor and protective devices must be tested before operation.

The integrated protective conductor braid enables a correct protective earth connection. Electrical connection must be carried out by a qualified person, taking into account the selected voltage, total power and operating environment.

Important: the heating cable has an IP20 protection rating. It is not protected against moisture or water and must not be used in wet areas, outdoors, immersed in liquids or in locations where condensation or water splashes may occur.

The heating cable is not suitable for potentially explosive atmospheres unless the selected configuration has been separately approved and certified for that purpose.

Before use, confirm that the heating cable, heated object, temperature sensor, controller, mounting components and any thermal insulation are suitable for the intended operating temperature.
