Water pipe frost protection heating cable installation and useful tips:

NB! Plastic water pipes must not be allowed to freeze, even if a defrosting cable is installed, because water expands by up to 9% when it freezes, which means that if the plastic pipe itself does not break, the ice can most likely push the pipe's connections and branches open, which will later cause leaks!

Water pipe heating cables are factory-made to a specific length and cannot be changed. If necessary, please consult us in advance. If a thermostat is not used in the installation, it is important to make sure that the heating cable is only connected during periods of risk of freezing. If the heating cable is installed inside the water pipe, a separate inlet is also required.
Water pipe heating cable is effective and energy-saving if the pipe is insulated.

Insulation thickness on a water pipe: For example, if the pipe is located outdoors and to prevent it from freezing at -30 degrees, then for 3/4" and 1" water pipes, at least 3cm of insulation is required. If the heating cable is installed on top of the water pipe, then the insulation must be selected one step larger than the water pipe so that the pipe heating cable can fit between them without any problems. You can find the insulation thickness required for other pipe diameters in the attached product file at the bottom of the page or call us and we will help.

Installing the heating cable on the water pipe:

If the water pipe heating cable is installed on a plastic water pipe, it is necessary to stick aluminum tape under the heating cable along the entire installation length. Next, the pipe heating cable is installed and then the heating cables are attached to the water pipes along the entire length with aluminum tape. This installation provides very good heat distribution and rapid heat transfer to the water pipe. When installing on a metal pipe, it is sufficient if the heating cable is covered and stuck straight along the entire length with foil tape. This installation method guarantees good heat transfer to the pipe and prevents the heating cable from sinking into the insulation later. When choosing insulation for the water pipe, it should be purchased for a pipe one step larger so that in addition to the water pipe, there is also free space for the heating cable. We should definitely not forget to simultaneously install the thermostat sensor on the pipe in the place where we think there is the greatest risk of freezing.

Installing the heating cable inside the water pipe:

The heating cable is inserted into the water pipe through a sealed inlet, which is installed on the branching tee as shown in the pictures below. The heating cable in the water pipe must enter the tee / pipe directly or at a minimal angle. The heating cable must not be inserted into a pipe with taps and right-angled elbows. Experience shows that in the case of a 1 inch water pipe, the cable can be inserted from the end of the pipe up to approx. 20-25 meters. For longer water pipes, it is necessary to use auxiliary equipment. Installing the heating cable inside the water pipe is 20% more economical compared to installing it on top of the pipe (with a temperature regulator) due to direct contact with water. This is especially useful for longer sections.

The table below shows how much additional insulation a heated pipe needs to prevent freezing. This depends on the pipe diameter, the minimum ambient temperature and the power of the heating cable. When selecting a heating cable, the number given in the table must be less than ten. If necessary, ask for more information.
