The heating cable is installed either in concrete, limestone dust, cold asphalt or a layer of sand. The heating cables are installed to a depth of approximately 3-7cm. The outdoor heating cable is weatherproof and can also be used in gutters.

Outdoor heating cable installation:

Depending on how fast we want the snow to melt and how well the outdoor heating cable penetrates the heat-conducting soil (sand or concrete), the installation power per square meter is selected accordingly, 200 - 300W per square meter. More for bridges, ramps or stairs that are open at the bottom. It is always useful to install a waterproof foam plastic (blue) insulation layer underneath before installing the heating cable. This is necessary if the heating has been turned off for a long time and there has been no ice or snow to melt, but it is freezing outside. Without an insulation layer, the ground can freeze very deeply and when the heating is turned on again, the initial melting of the snow can be energy-intensive and time-consuming. The installation depth of the heating cable is approximately 3-7cm. In the case of paving stones, the heating cable is placed directly under the stones - in a layer of sand or limestone dust, so that the cable does not interfere with the installation of the stones and is safely protected if the stones move in the upper layer over time.

Staircase heating:

If the snow melting system is installed on an open staircase from below, additional insulation of at least 5 to 10 cm of waterproof foam plastic would be necessary on the underside of the steps. In the case of a massive staircase with a closed bottom, insulation would also save energy; if there is no snow and the heating is turned off, the stone massif would not freeze too deeply. When calculating the appropriate cable power for a staircase, the same principle of 200-300W per square meter is used, and the cuts from step to step should not be forgotten. When calculating the heating cable for a staircase, the rule can also be used that the first bend from the front edge of the staircase should not be further than 4 cm from the edge (to avoid a large cooling effect of the front edge of the staircase) and the subsequent bends should be spaced approximately 8-10 cm apart. Knowing the width of the staircase and the height of the steps, we can also select the required heating cable by length. The staircase heating cable can be calculated to be a little longer than necessary, so it would be good to have a small heated area in front of the stairs so that there are no ice bumps that could form from melting snow when going up and down the stairs.

To melt ice and snow on smaller areas, simpler thermostats with a floor sensor ( OJ ETV 1991 +0..40°C ) are used to regulate the temperature and are adjusted to maintain a surface temperature of +2..3°C so that the snow melts from the area and at the same time does not overheat. If the installed capacity is greater than 5kW, we recommend using thermostats that can also check the actual presence of ice and snow in the outdoor area with additional humidity sensors OJ ETR2 and OJ ETO2 .
