Heating the soil of the greenhouse plant bed is intended for spring pre-growing of greenhouse plants and extending the autumn season. Heating cable from a Danish company Heatcom is installed in the greenhouse soil and is designed to raise the temperature of the growing soil to the desired temperature.
The heating cable keeps the plant roots warm and therefore the surrounding air temperature can be slightly cooler. Heating the soil in the greenhouse increases the success of seed germination and plant growth. The heat from the heating cable is best transferred directly to the plant roots and the entire large greenhouse does not have to be heated. Soil heating also allows plants that usually grow in subtropical/tropical latitudes to be grown. The soil and air temperature can be adjusted to provide the optimal conditions for the plants.
The recommended greenhouse soil temperature varies for different plants. For example, tomatoes germinate between 20-25C, while chili peppers only between 25-30C. You can read more about pre-germination here. from this link .
The electric heating cable for a greenhouse is always installed together with a thermostat to ensure the desired temperature. There are even several suitable thermostats. You can find a selection of them from here .
Installing the heating cable in the greenhouse soil and calculating the required power:
To provide sufficient heat to the soil, 75-100W per square meter should be installed in the soil. The specific power of the cable should not exceed 20 W/m, as too high a temperature can dry out the roots of the plants. Different plants react differently to heating, so it would be wise to test on a smaller area first.
Installation:
The heated floor of the greenhouse should also be insulated to prevent heat from moving downwards. To do this, an insulation layer that does not absorb water (for example, polystyrene foam) must be installed. The insulation layer must be covered with a moisture-proof film. A 10-15 cm layer of sand is spread on the film, the heating cables are placed approximately in the middle of the layer (5-7.5 cm of sand both under and on the cable). The distance between the heating cable loops is about 15 cm. A metal mesh is placed on the sand layer to protect the heating cables from mechanical damage when working with various garden tools. Finally, the top layer of soil, soil boxes or pots are installed.
Greenhouse plant bed soil/soil heatingAdvantages of greenhouse soil heating:
- Soil warming supports seed germination and root development
- Ideal for growing seedlings and rooting cuttings
- Electric underfloor heating ensures even heat in the soil
- Suitable as a base for flower pots to warm the roots
- Greenhouse floor heating ensures warm soil for potted plants during wintering
- Thermostats available in different versions
- Heating cables suitable for greenhouses available in a wide range with prices under the topic of underfloor heating cables

Overview
The greenhouse seedling bed heating cable heats the growing surface directly at the roots. This supports spring pre-planting, extending the autumn season, and growing heat-loving plants.
Installation
The cable is installed in the ground together with a thermostat. To reduce the downward movement of heat, a non-absorbent insulation layer, a moisture-proof film and a 10–15 cm layer of sand are used, in the middle of which the cable is located.
Power
The recommended soil heating power is 75–100 W/m². The specific power of the heating cable should not exceed 20 W/m to prevent the roots from overheating or drying out.
